في Zamalek - Shagaret El Dorr St., Cairo, Cairo (30.062520 31.219630)

Standing on 26th July, dressed professionally, waiting for a friend to pick me up to go to an Opera concert, a car full of 5 men in their 40s slowed in front of me so the driver could lean over and yell something incomprehensible but no doubt obscene, while the others snickered and I raised my hands in a 'what the fuck do you want, are you kidding me?' sort of gesture. A male bystander also seemed puzzled by their actions and checked to see my reaction sympathetically.

If professional women simply standing on the sidewalk are made to feel dirty and get treated like prostitutes, what are we to do? I was so angry, and was annoyed at myself for not reacting more strongly, like fingering him or yelling 'shame on your and your family you piece of shit!' I'm sure they would all be delighted to have their sisters or mothers treated that way by their countrymen. Filthy hypocrites.

What's sad is that nearly every male passing me slowed to ogle and smirk, making me less confident and more angry with every minute. Is walking around in a fit of offensive rage the answer?
