at Hotel room, Luxor, Luxor (25.673170 32.661750)
I was on holiday with my friend in Luxor. I got a lot of harassment from men, most of which I laughed off. A cleaner in my hotel became, in retrospect, a bit obsessed and continually tried to be alone with me. It even became a bit of a joke, as other guests noticed him hanging around me. The night before I came home, he was waiting for me in my room. He grabbed me and moved his finger across his throat as if slicing it with a knife. He raped me twice. I was crying and asking him to stop but he didn't. When he had finished, he tried to shake my hand as if everything was fine. I called the police who were terrible. I had to tell and re-tell my story in front of 3 male policemen, several male hotel staff, the doorman and his mates. This was entirely humiliating, and I felt they just thought I was another stupid tourist who had changed her mind. The police said they would come back and see me in the morning. Needless to say they didn't and I flew home. I emailed the hotel several times, but guess what? no response. Since returning I have had a sexual health check and am fine, thankfully. I am hiding this from my teenage daughters and am so glad it happened to me and not them. The worst thing is I feel I can never go back to Egypt, a place I really love. I am so sorry for all my sisters in Egypt who have to suffer harassment and rape without any hope of justice.
