HarassMap honored to receive an award from Cairo University

As part of the End of Year Celebration of the work of the Unit to Combat Sexual Harassment and Violence Against Women at Cairo University, HarassMap was honored to receive an award of recognition from the University President Gaber Gad Nassar for its work with the university to combat sexual harassment and violence.

Throughout 2016, HarassMap has worked together with Cairo University to provide technical support and advice to other universities across Egypt to take steps to stand up to sexual harassment.

During the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence, we partnered up with the university and Dr. Maha Said, head of the Unit to Combat Sexual Harassment and Violence, to run a 2 day workshop where representatives from 10 public and private universities came together to learn from the Cairo University experience of implementing a university wide policy against sexual harassment and to discuss how they can work towards adopting a similar policy at their home campuses.

Following the ceremony on Thursday January 12, Reem Wael, HarassMap’s Director, said that the recognition by Cairo University of all its supporting and implementing partners is an excellent example of the leadership of Cairo University on this issue and on its faith in the necessity of society wide collaboration to bring about tangible change towards creating an academic community safe from sexual harassment and violence.

We are looking forward to yet another fruitful year of collaboration with Cairo University and other universities around Egypt as part of our work to create an environment that does not tolerate sexual harassment.
